The Wudongde HVDC Project is a key inter‑provincial transmission project under the National “13th Five-Year Plan” for Energy Development and the “13th Five-Year Plan” for Power Development. It represents an important measure to implement the strategy of transmitting electricity from west to east and to win the tough battle against pollution, while also serving as a major initiative to support the development of the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area. Upon completion, the project will introduce multiple grid‑technology innovations and set several world records: it will be the world’s first ultra‑high‑voltage multi‑terminal HVDC project, the world’s first ultra‑high‑voltage hybrid HVDC project, the first ultra‑high‑voltage flexible HVDC converter station, and the first flexible HVDC system capable of automatically clearing DC faults on overhead lines. This groundbreaking project will enhance China’s core competitiveness in power‑related science and technology and bolster its global standing. At the same time, it will help elevate the domestic power‑equipment manufacturing sector, secure a leading position in the global ultra‑high‑voltage HVDC field, and make a significant contribution to the “Made in China 2025” initiative.
